One of the biggest reasons websites run afoul of the search engines is because they worry too much about the search engines (and yes, I realize that sounds contradictory). If you find yourself building (or buying) some particular link because you just want to look better in the eyes of Google you're probably going to regret that link somewhere down the road...especially if that's how you always approach your link building. No matter what you do as part of your SEO campaign you need to keep your HUMAN visitors in mind-is this piece of content actually teaching anyone anything or am I just trying to rank for a particular keyword? Will this links actually drive targeted traffic to my site or do I need to fill some link quota this month?

Utilize Analytics During Keyword Selection

Incorporate a Variety of Keyword Anchor Text

SEO best practice is to conduct keyword research before progressing with any other component of the campaign. This is because keywords set the foundation of the campaign and are used in every SEO activity from on site optimization to content marketing to social media to traditional link building. Keyword research should be conducted for every single non branded page of the site including all product and service pages. Each page on a website should serve a specific purpose, which means that different keywords will be targeted. During the keyword research phase it's likely that you may uncover a decent number of keywords that are all relevant and have search volume.

And while I can understand why that's useful, a mountain of gated content is B2B link building gold! Take just ¼ of your gated content and unlock it-now the search engines can crawl and index it properly, meaning searchers can find it organically and you have a better chance of pulling some long tail visitors through to your site.

And unlocked content can still be used as form of lead generation! Let visitors to your site read the three page summary for free and encourage them to sign-up for your newsletter in order to download the full white paper. You can then post the summary as a blog post (with link to lead form for full white paper), promote it through social media, share it on community websites and so forth.
