Don't Look for SEO Shortcuts

What frustrates website owners the most about SEO is that it is a slow moving process and it takes time to build any kind of momentum. They are used to spending money on a marketing, promotions, or advertising plan that is going to result in a quick ROI. Well, it just simply isn't going to happen with SEO. However, SEO is a critical component of an online marketing plan today. People turn to the search engines to find information, products, businesses, etc. Basically, a good search engine presence is everything. Website owners understand that but always seem to be on the look out for a quick SEO fix. Website owners, business owners, current and potential SEO clients take note: there is no such thing!

How SEO is Impacted by a Branding Change

Using the SEO industry as an example, 5 years ago it was accepted practice to submit a website to lots of broad directories to get a backlink. Today, broad (and free) directories are nearly dead. People don't use them to search and the search engines largely ignore them. Many have even been de-indexed. This change in the industry meant that as an SEO marketing company, we changed our approach. The focus is now on creating relevant, fresh content on a regular basis that includes keywords and links and improving a social media presence.

How B2B SEO Differs from B2C SEO

The way to market to a fellow business and the way to market to an everyday consumer are usually very different. Sure, many of the methods are the same but the way that you approach them needs to be tweaked based on the audience. The B2B market has very different expectations than the consumer market because the decision is being made on behalf of a business. The product or service that they are considering affects every employee within the business and ultimately the bottom line for the company. It's much different than a parity product that consumers are looking for. This results in differences in the way that a B2B SEO campaign should be approached compared to a business to consumer SEO campaign.

Getting More Value from Your Published B2B Content

Most B2B marketers understand the importance of great content and how it can impact their long term B2B SEO success. However, studies have shown that most B2B marketers are concerned with producing enough content to help drive their SEO and social media marketing campaigns forward...and they should be. In my experience, a B2B company that fails to consistently produce informative and engaging content will ultimately flat-line with regards to their SEO progress.

Why B2B Content is Essential for Link Building

Link building is the ongoing component of a B2B SEO campaign. Link building is never really "done" since the search engines like to see that inbound links pointing to a site grow naturally over time. If a site is steadily growing links and then suddenly stops, it will eventually result in a dip in search engine trust which then results in a dip in ranking. That's why it's never recommended to scale back on B2B SEO efforts once you start seeing results. Those results can disappear as quickly as they came.

Where Did My Website Visitors Go?

Instead of focusing on rank (which fluctuates and is based on too many variables to be an accurate measurement of SEO success) we always tell our SEO clients to pay more attention to visitor growth. You aren't going to see a huge bump in visitors at the onset of a campaign but over time there should be a steady improvement. Of course, fluctuations are going to happen. Just because you had 50 visitors one day and then only 15 or 20 for a few days after that it is no cause for concern. It's better to look at a trend over at least a few months.  As SEO experts we'd obviously like to take all of the credit for website visitors but it's just not the truth. Website visitors come from a variety of sources and a strong brand and a strong overall marketing campaign is what drives visitors to a site. Just because you are now investing in SEO it doesn't mean that you should halt all other marketing or advertising.

Blog Posts Require More Than SEO

A blog post is like any other page of your site. It can rank in the search engines over the long term for whatever keyword or keyword phrase that you choose to target. If you are looking for content inspiration, check out the Google AdWords Keyword Tool and see what kinds of search terms people are looking for that are related to your industry or even start typing some "How to" type queries into Google to see what Google suggests. If it's suggested, people are looking for it and if you write a blog post with that title and answer a question, it will be found.

Boost the Visibility of B2B SEO Content

In order for a B2B SEO campaign to be successful, it must include a strong content component. The static content that exists on a website just isn't going to cut it these days. The most powerful links to a website/blog are the ones that occur naturally when an outside party decides that what you have to say is useful/interesting/informative/entertaining etc. In order to achieve these links it requires creating quality content such as blog posts, articles, eBooks, guides, whitepapers, and videos on a regular basis.
