A former client of ours had SEO growth like I had never seen before. Year-over-year their organic traffic jumped from around 450 visitors to 2,000 a month. That's over 400% growth in just one year! In my 13+ year career in online marketing and SEO I don't ever remember seeing a single website do so well in such a relatively amount of time. Typically 20-30% growth in a year is more than enough to make clients happy.

The other day I was talking with one of our SEO clients and they wanted to know if there was any way they could turn this trip their CEO was taking to NYC to attend an invite-only roundtable into some SEO success. Since the roundtable was closed to the media the usual event promotion activities, the speaker bios, and event recap blog posts (all potential sources of links) were out.

In many cases, a company doesn't set up a blog on their website until it gets started with an SEO campaign. Until the company understands the importance of content and how an active blog can correlate with SEO success, blogging isn't often part of the equation mostly because there is only so much time in the day. However, sometimes clients with no prior SEO experience do come to us with an existing blog.

There are plenty of tips out there about "white hat link building", and many can be found right here on this blog. However, the face of link building has drastically changed over the years. In fact, we'd even say that "link building" isn't even the correct term for generating inbound links to your website anymore. Now it's more like "link earning".

With all the major changes Google has made to the Webmaster Guidelines, not to mention the Penguin updates that have really shaken up the SERPs and taken more than one site down for the count, many site owners (and more than a few SEOs) are left wondering if links have a place in any white hat SEO program.

Before signing on the dotted line and committing to pay an SEO firm for a specified period of time it's necessary to have an understanding of the type of work that the firm does and what exactly is included in the proposed rate. An SEO program involves many moving parts and you don't want to find out when it's too late that certain items that are necessary to be successful with SEO today aren't included either because the firm simply doesn't offer them or because they charge an extra fee for those services.

Press release distribution was once a strong weapon in an SEO arsenal. Publishing a press release provided an easy opportunity to get a page of content out there on the web that included links back to your site, and not just any type of links, but keyword anchor text links that told the search engine spiders what the page being linked to was about. Best practice was to include one link per 100 words. So, if you published a 500 word press release that meant you could get 5 links back to your site! It was SEO gold.

Proving social media ROI is still a little complicated for most site owners and marketers. For the most part, one tweet does not automatically equal one sale and companies looking for one-to-one metrics to show ROI are often disappointed. Yes, there are numbers that show how Pinterest activity turns into sales in the grand scheme of things, but most companies are still looking for the right way to accurately measure the effect of their social media campaigns.

Towards the end of March, Google announced that they actively penalized MyBlogGuest, a well-known service that helps pair writers and blogs for guest blogging. MyBlogGuest was created by up Ann Smarty, a well-known blogger and social media user.

I was often invited to guest post and some people even started approaching me trying to hire me as a guest post contractor (I even didn't have a "services" page at that time), so I could clearly see the demand.
