When you live and breathe SEO like we do it's easy to forget that most business people, both big and small, don't play in the SEO sandbox at all. We often get asked questions that to us seem like, "well, duh," but to a small business owner or even a VP of Marketing that never delved into SEO before, it's a legitimate concern or query.

In a May blog post about SEO myths, Bing flat out said, "You want links to surprise you. You should never know in advance a link is coming, or where it's coming from. If you do, that's the wrong path. Links are part of the bigger picture. You want them, but you want them to be natural." To me, that means that Bing, much like Google, only wants site owners to earn links naturally. That means you don't ask for it, you don't build it, you don't trade for it, you don't pay for it (even if it's legitimate, like a partnership); you have no hand in creating it.

In July 2012 this client's blog pulled in 3,416 visitors. Two years later that number hit 14,892! That's more than a 400% increase in traffic to the blog over a two year period. How exactly did we grow traffic to the blog so substantially in such a relatively short amount of time?

One of the most important places to market your business today is via social media. No matter who your target audience members are, there's a good chance that they are using social media to some extent and most people are logging into at least one social account on a daily basis. There's evidence that the younger generation may be moving away from Facebook but let's face it, it's still the social media powerhouse for now.

There are many reasons to be creating content on behalf of your business. Content informs your target audience and establishes your business as a thought leader in the industry which generates trust. This is the top goal of content, but another goal of content should be to get it shared. Content that is shared in the form of links on other web pages or within social media helps to improve your SEO efforts. If you have a respectable social media following but notice that your content is getting very few shares, or maybe even no shares, you might be doing something wrong.

Over the last few years Brick Marketing has talked with many site owners who have burned by their SEO firms. Some were paying a monthly "maintenance" fee but no work other than pulling keyword ranking reports was getting done. Others would go months without hearing from their SEO firm, even if they just had a simple question. And worst of all, a few were actually penalized because of black hat or outdated link building activities their SEO firm had done.

One of the biggest mistakes a site owner or marketing manager can make when it comes to their SEO is assuming they know how their audience is searching. While you can certainly make a few educated guesses, you can't just blindly target various keywords and search queries if you don't have the data to back it up. For instance, you might offer "small business accounting services" because technically, any company with fewer than 500 employees can qualify for many U.S. Small Business Administration programs.

When we receive an inquiry from a prospective client, the first thing we do is take a look at their website since that's where we'll be spending the majority of our time. If it's not almost immediately clear what the company does or what products they sell, we already have hesitations about working with them. That's because we've found that the clients that often have the most SEO success are the ones that specialize in one niche and the website is built to support that. A website that focuses on one specific thing is straightforward.

There is so much more to a social media marketing campaign than merely setting up the company page and adding a bio and maybe a few pictures. Yet that's all that so many companies do! A company social media page needs to be an active and engaging entity. That means that it needs to be updated often with useful and informative posts.

Not too long ago guest blogging was a popular SEO link building tactic. Write a guest post for a website, include a link back to your site, and improve your link portfolio. It was a "win win" scenario. The website that published the guest post was getting content to keep the site active and the guest author was able to get a link back.
