What Are Your B2B SEO Competitors Doing?

What B2Bs entering into an SEO campaign need to understand is that the online space is extremely competitive. Even if you've been able to create a strong brand and build a successful business using offline traditional marketing methods, that doesn't mean that you will be able to quickly get to the top of a SERP (search engine results page). Sometimes in the online space you may find that there are a whole new set of competitors to content with. While you had been focusing on traditional marketing, they had put the majority of their resources into online marketing and SEO making their online brand stronger than their offline brand.

3 Questions You Shouldn't Ask Your SEO Company

In my 13 year career as an SEO professional I've gotten some pretty crazy questions from clients. Not that I mind answering questions-I think a well-educated client makes for a better client so I'm happy to answer any and all questions my clients have about SEO, no matter how basic it may seem because I know that the more they "get it" the better their SEO campaign will be in the end. But there are a few questions that I've gotten over the years that I wish clients and prospects would just stop asking!

Interview with Local SEO Expert Myles Anderson

Recently I had the chance to interview Myles Anderson, local SEO expert and Founder & CEO of BrightLocal.com. BrightLocal has it's own set of local SEO automation tools including the Google+ Local Wizard, CitationTracker, Local SEO Check-up, and three others, with 2 more tools in the pipeline! Myles is also frequent contributor to Search Engine Land

Thanks so much to Myles Anderson for spending the time to answer all of my questions!
Most local businesses are relatively small. How can a one or two man team make the best use of their time when it comes to local SEO?

The Long Term Impact of Evergreen Content

Evergreen content is content (blogs, articles, white papers, videos, etc) that will be useful and informative for your readers for a long time to come. The beauty of well-written evergreen content is that it will continue to naturally attract visitors, links and social shares long after its initial publication and promotion. The graph below shows how an evergreen blog post, published in early April 2012 is still seeing spikes of traffic and activity from time to time. As this post ages it builds up search engine trust (helping it perform better in the SERPs) which might also explain why it did better at the end of 2012 than it did when the post first went live and was promoted via social media.

Read Industry Blogs to Improve Your SEO

We all know that blogging is an important part of SEO because it creates fresh content on your site and provides an opportunity to target different variations of keywords and get noticed by the search engine spiders. Almost as important as it is to create and publish your own blog posts is to spend some time reading other industry related blogs. In addition to keeping you up to date with what is going on in the industry (which you should know about in order to be considered an expert!) it can also improve your own SEO efforts.

Don't Make These B2B SEO Errors

While the overall approach to SEO may be similar for B2Cs and B2Bs, B2B SEO often takes additional care since the sales cycle is that much longer. B2C customers make decisions much more quickly, especially if the product is relatively inexpensive. B2B decisions affect an entire organization and therefore the product or service needs to be a perfect fit. Since business decision makers are turning to the search engines to find products and services, a B2B SEO campaign is necessary for every B2B company that has a website.

Are Nofollow Links Still Worth Something?

"Nofollow" is how a site owner can tell the search spiders to literally not follow a specific link through to the next page it links to. Some site owners use nofollow links as a way to discourage spammers from building up inbound links from their site because a nofollow links doesn't pass any link juice or search engine value onto the linked-to site. If there is no "real" SEO value to be had from a nofollow link the spammers will leave their site alone. But are nofollow links really worthless when it comes to your SEO? Or is there still value to be had if you go about building the right kind of nofollow links?

Go From No Blog to 6 Posts a Month in 3 Easy Steps

I realize that a lot more goes into designing and building a blog so there are a few extra steps that will need to be taken in the beginning to ensure your blog is properly launched. And once you get the blog up and running there is also the issue of content promotion and social media sharing, which is another process in and of itself. But content creation and the actual blog writing, which is arguably the biggest blogging problem facing many businesses today, isn't nearly as complicated as you might think it is!

Utilize Analytics During Keyword Selection

The first step of an SEO campaign is keyword research. Keywords are incorporated into site meta information, content, and anchor text links pointing back to the site. Targeting the wrong keywords can result in getting the wrong traffic to your site, traffic that will bounce from the site without converting. It's important to use a keyword research tool (like the Google AdWords Keyword Tool) to see search behavior for certain keywords and generate a list of relevant keywords. The Google Keyword Tool will tell you what the monthly search volume is for each keyword on a Global or Local (U.S.) level. It will also note what the competition level is for that keyword (Low, Medium, High). Keywords with a high search volume are typically much more competitive than those with a lower search volume. Typically the best keywords to target fall somewhere in that middle "sweet spot".
