Who's to Blame for That SEO Penalty?

The biggest SEO failure is obviously any kind of penalty (either algorithmic or manual). This doesn't just mean that you SEO program didn't work, it actually worked against you. When sites are whacked with an SEO penalty it can take months or even years for them to completely recover, depending on the severity of the penalty and how often algorithm refreshes happen. For instance, a site that got hit with an SEO penalty after Penguin 1.1 in May 2012 wouldn't know if they had done what they needed to recover until the next refresh, which came in October 2012. That's are awful long time to survive and hope that when the refresh comes around you actually fixed what was wrong with your SEO program. But when a site suffers from an SEO penalty who is to blame? That often depends on how the daily SEO work was divvied up.

Select a Variety of SEO Keywords

Keywords are the foundation of an SEO campaign. People search using keywords or key phrases and the search engines show results that include those keywords and match that query. Of course, it's not as simple as it sounds. Just throwing a bunch of keywords on a page isn't going to get your site to rank. It may have worked back in the day but the search algorithm has become much more sophisticated and complex.

Interview with Greg Sterling of Sterling Market Intelligence

Recently I had the chance to interview Greg Sterling, contributing editor of Search Engine Land.  You can read Greg's personal blog Screenwerk, which follows the world of media and local advertising. He also writes about the mobile internet at Internet2Go. Greg Sterling is also the founder of Sterling Market Intelligence, which researches the Internet's impact on offline consumer behavior. Thanks to Greg for taking the time to answer my questions! Question: There is little doubt that search traffic from mobile devices is growing, but do you think tablet users search differently than they would on a PC?

Ways to Synchronize SEO and Social Media

Both social media and SEO have evolved exponentially in recent years which has made things exciting, confusing, and frustrating all at once for online marketers. In its infancy, social media was an online hang out for friends and family members to communicate with one another. It has now become a way of life and businesses and brands use it to promote and interact with target audience members. Link building has always been an important component of SEO, as inbound links were used to determine a website's "trust factor". As more and more people started signing up for social media accounts and posting links to their social profiles, the search engines caught on. Social users were essentially saying, "this link is important to me" whenever they shared anything so the search engines added social signals to the search algorithms.

The Power of Real Author Authority

When Google introduced PageRank it was basically the search giant's attempt to "grade" pages on the Internet in the same manner that academic pages had been "graded" offline. Academic papers that are cited more frequently are generally considered more authoritative and prestigious; Google applied the same principle to the web but used links instead of citations to determine which pages deserved to rank better in the SERPS.

Clients Need To Be Involved in Link Building

Link building is the ongoing component of an SEO campaign. Once a site has been optimized, it needs to generate search engine trust. It's the inbound links that point to a site that convey this trust to the search engines. If quality sites are linking over to your site, the search engines view your site as a quality site by association. Link building has become more complex in recent years.

Share All B2B Content in Blog Posts

B2B products and services are different from B2C products and services because often times they serve a specific niche as opposed to being used by the masses. Many B2C products don't need extensive explanation and the sales cycle is typically much shorter, especially for parity products. In the world of B2B the sales cycle is longer because the decision process can take time. It's a business decision that affects everyone in the company, ROI, and future success. This means that B2B decision makers want to learn as much information as possible before spending any portion of their budget. This is why an essential component of a B2B marketing strategy, specifically an online marketing strategy, is content.

Some Brands Will Never be Social Media Sweethearts

In an interview I did with link building expert Eric Ward we started talking about how social media marketing, SEO, content marketing, and link building all worked together to build a brand online presence. After all, the content you write (optimized for SEO of course) fuels your social media marketing campaigns, which generates social signals and links and drives traffic back to your site. But as Eric pointed out in his interview, social media is about people and you can't always control what people are going to want to talk about: Can you incorporate social into your linking strategy? Absolutely. Should you? Maybe. It will depend on your site and your business. Likes and shares and pluses are really not very good metrics for organic search, because there are inherent biases against certain topics. The search engines have to be able to recognize that a site or brand is not popular or unpopular based purely on tweet/plus/like.

How a Merger Could Affect SEO

Most businesses start up with the intention of growing over time. Isn't that the goal? Nearly every business starts as a "small business" but as it succeeds over time, along with it comes growth and potential new opportunities.
