Forget These Old School SEO Thoughts

What's both exciting and challenging about SEO is that it's an industry that is constantly evolving. What was considered best practice even just a few years ago might no longer be relevant. This is why it's so important for those of us in the industry to stay informed by reading the search engine Webmaster Guidelines, visiting top industry blogs, and attending seminars and trainings. There are a few old school SEO thoughts that are still floating around as current SEO truths. The purpose of this post is to point them out and advise against thinking this way, which can both get your site into trouble and cause a lot of frustration throughout the SEO campaign.

Taking Advantage of the Many Small B2B Keyword Ponds

I came across this great line in a Search Engine Watch post by Jennifer Van Iderstyne about keyword search volume. She said, "You won't get traffic by being a small fish in a big lake, but the good news is, small ponds are everywhere you look, if you're willing to see them." Why SEO is Slow

The search engines want to rank the sites that are going to provide users with the best possible experience. The websites that perform the best in search are the ones that are "trusted". Many factors play into attaining this trust including the SEO practice of link building however one of the factors that the search engines look at is the domain age of a website. Thousands of new domains are registered every day. They might turn into a great source of content or they might be another fly by night site that is only maintained for a few months which is why the search engines pay attention to domain age. The search engines don't want to rank a site that isn't in it for the long haul. Content that is published on a website that has aged will perform better than the content that is published on a relatively new site.
