While it is true that the primary goal of an SEO campaign is to improve traffic from the search engines from visitors using non branded keywords that are targeted in the SEO campaign, you can't discount the importance of branded keyword search terms and how SEO affects these kinds of searches too.  SEO best practice is to optimize every page of your website. Some website and business owners that are short on time or resources will optimize their homepage and main product or service pages but won't spend anytime optimizing their branded pages that can include contact information, directions/address, careers, resources, testimonials, case studies, etc. This is a mistake because it weakens the user experience of the website.

The right way to use forums to build links is to shift your mindset away from link building at first. If you are thinking of it only as a way to build links, you are no better than the spammers. The right way to use forums is to actually help potential target audience members with a problem, question, or issue that they may have and establish yourself or your business as a trusted source or a thought leader in a particular industry.  In order to do this, you are going to need to spend some time doing online research to find these forums. You will need to sign up to use these forums. As a new user, you will need to build up your credibility at first.
