| The Harsh Realities of a Search Engine Penalty |
| In early October 2012, Google lived up to Matt Cutts' promise of "jarring" updates. In about a week Google pushed out the exact match domain (EMD) update, a new Panda update, a page layout algorithm update AND the long awaited Penguin refresh. The EMD update happened first, and plenty of sites without keyword rich domains claimed they were unfairly nailed with a search engine penalty. A few days later it came to light that all these other updates went live around the same time (SEO Roundtable has this great graph breaking it down) and site owners where left scratching their heads-which algorithm update caused my search engine penalty? As a business owner, I completely understand the terror that lurks in every business owner's heart when they hear about another Google update. It's terrifying to think that your entire online business could collapse because of some equation. A search engine penalty is no joke and many sites can't survive for long after they've been hit. However, as a white hat SEO provider, I also believe that very few, if any, sites that were hit by a search engine penalty have a completely squeaky clean SEO history. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE |
| Why the Meta Description Still Matters |
| The search engines may not consider the meta description when ranking a website, but they still use them. When you conduct a search for something, the meta description that you write and include in the code is what shows up underneath the Title. If you don't include this description, the search engines will make one up for you and possibly just include the first few sentences of text on the page which might not accurately represent the page as a whole. The meta description is written for the search engine users, the actual human beings that are deciding whether or not to visit your website. Think of the meta description as your sales pitch for the page. A searcher wants to click on the web page that is most relevant to their needs to save time and aggravation. If you create a compelling meta description a search engine user will be more likely to click on your page. There is only so much space on the SERP for the meta description, so keep it to 150 characters (including spaces) or less to avoid the search engine cutting off your message. | Don't Judge Your Social Success From One Update |
| When it comes to social media marketing, it's easy to lose the forest for the trees. We get so hung up on the daily numbers (how many times this piece of content is shared, how many people Liked our Facebook page, how many reTweets this link got), that we lost sight of the bigger picture. I've heard it from many site owners- "Well I posted this update to Facebook and nothing happened, so I don't think social media marketing will work for my business." When it comes to social success, you've got to remember that it's not the individual updates that make the real difference, it's your social presence, personality and activity as a whole.
